When the old Macabre Theatre was finally torn down, workers discovered a hive of subterranean catacombs beneath the foundation. Grass Stained Glass started as a handful of new song sketches that were charted and mapped to be molded and experimented with during the Up the Creek shows, but as fans of the Owls know, what happens to songs in the live setting is a warping transformation that carries the tune to places unexplored in the studio, compiling textural layers that, while leaving them recognizable, often times places them tangentially at odds with the original versions, finding a niche of space all their own and creating something new that did not exist before the first notes were struck. [UncleDuff management notes: the above, unbelievably long run on sentence should be taken as a literary parallel to what happens when ZMPO plug in live.] What you hold in your hands is not a live album in the truest sense, but the original basic tracks and chord change vamps have been blended with various portions of tracks recorded during the Owls performance on St. Paul's riverfront to bring a close to the Eclectic*Music*River*Test. While listening, bear in mind that Zander is no perfectionist. Nor does he expect perfection from the Owls. He relishes mistakes as they sometimes open up whole new avenues for exploration. All he asks of his band is that they push boundaries and he allows them the freedom to expound upon notes and themes and then gently pulls everyone back into the groove when the time is right. Mine Shaft gig flyer

The year was 1994. Hanz had been playing bass for a number of bands in Thunder Bay's thriving punk community when he got the call. That call came from Johnny Wonderz who straked the guitar for Ontario's most notorious punk outfit, Pout. Pout had recently lost their horse addled leader and bassist to his addiction and Wonderz had been checking out Hanz at various shows. It was a match made in Heave...er...Hel...uh...Anarchy. Wonderz and drummer Lanny X were already a lethal combination of angst and energy, but the addition of Hanz Openschut on bass and vocals propelled Pout to the top of The Ontario underground. Hanz's first gig with Pout was at the storied Mine Shaft club in Sudbury. Pout headlined the show with openers Of Chaos, The Immortals, Gypsies and The Volcanos. It is widely regarded by those in the scene as one of the greatest punk shows of it's time. ------------------------- Lanny designed most of Pout's flyers and he had a habit of finding albums by bands he hated at thrift stores, using the album cover as background for his flyer. For this show we find him making a decided mockery of a certain iconic 70's album of fluff pop crap. After Xeroxing copies to pass out, the original album cover designs were often left in bathroom stalls of seedy dives to be found by unsuspecting patrons. This one recently resurfaced at an estate sale of a wealthy collector of music memorabilia. UncleDuffRecords has made Xerox prints of the original available to fans with this limited run collectable. *as a special reward - the first person who can name the album cover defaced in Lanny's flyer will receive a download code for 3 songs recorded off the board at the Mine Shaft gig.

Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie

What happens when UncleDuffRecords' resident fader pusher bars the door to the control room for 3 weeks with several hours worth of ZMPO's newly recorded material? Well...this. "Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie" is essentially Frey's album. Oh sure, the Owls provided the instrumentation, but what came out at the end of his long process is strikingly different than the raw audio put to tape. Frey had been meticulously researching the recording techniques that were being experimented with in the year of his birth. 1967. The year that gave us the studio as "instrument" in the form of such iconic albums as Hendrix's "Axis: Bold As Love" or The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's..." (which also figured heavily into VanQ's cover art for this release). Armed with a collection of salvaged parts...springs, coils, metal plates, tubes, old warped tape reels and other assorted electric devices, Frey took the raw analog recordings and morphed them into this experimental magnum opus. But make no mistake, "Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie" is not an album full of oldie's channel staples.
