an economy of motion

The Owls lay a tight backdrop for Stalker's smokey vocal stylings which seem to indemnify her past. Recorded, mixed, mastered & produced by Z. Miggs for Uncle Duff Records 2009

Bubble Gum Gospel

Date Released: 4/9/2009   Tracks: 6   Sales: 13   Listens: 10

A slight departure for Zander & the Owls, this disc of slower, groovier, gospel pop songs (that still taste of pschedelia) is being released in advance of the 4CD Live album coming later this month. The songs here are moodier than the norm. The emotional trip is way heady, but with the right pre-listen rituals you're sure to enjoy it. This is Head-Phone Music. Date Released: 4/17/2009   Tracks: 6   Sales: 6   Listens: 5

To honor the start of the race for Lord Stanley's Cup comes this disc of hockey soundscapes from the happy industrialists. It drops the puck with "the 10 Minute Mark" & closes with an ode to Gordy Howe (a reworking of the Beatles "Revolution #9"). When the Gods of Frost came down from the frozen hinterlands to survey the games of Man, they gave to him sticks and pucks. The Lost Alley Tapes

Posthumous release of tapes he recorded in the back alley behind his apartment, "The Lost Alley Tapes" thrusts it's fist right into your eardrums! Lo-Fi, Lo-Tech and no external effects, these songs are just Hanz. Hanz screaming into his pawnshop mic. Hanz cutting apart his fingers on the rusty strings of his trusty bass. Just Hanz...raw...open...angry...and at his anarchistic best. Though Hanz is gone, long will these songs live on in our memories.

Replicant

Date Released: 5/22/2009   Tracks: 14   Sales: 6   Listens: 3

A parable of consciousness creation, Replicant is the story of Rene Martok. Drawing heavily on the Dickian Mythos, here is a not too distant future where cybernetic-genetibots are sold and marketed the way PC's are today. Rene Martok is one of those genetibots. More correctly, was one of those. For this is the story of his emerging self awareness and the Corporation's hunt to stop it from happening. Replicant, as metaphor, is the Vortromedans neuromanipulation that broght about the dawn of man.

Sludge Cartwright, following in the footsteps of two Johnnys...Rotten & Cash, deliver a bundle of Twang & Thunder on their debut. Recorded on the move in a makeshift studio/tractor-trailer while criss crossing America by way of back roads and country lanes. Sludge Cartwright brings the maverik, renegade, punk sneer to country. Hailed by art rock critics from Brooklyn and boycotted in Nashville, "REDnecks, WHITEtrash & BLUEballs" is a big ol' hollow body with Bigsby tremelo full of fun.

Jim

Date Released: 7/6/2009   Tracks: 12   Sales: 3   Listens: 3

1985's Jim was the "Mitts" first major label release (on Tire Records). Electric Church

Date Released: 8/7/2009   Tracks: 5   Sales: 11   Listens: 10

In advance of ZMPO's upcoming album, this EP gives us Zandergriff flying solo under the pseudonym "Dr. Zanzibar". Inspired by his recent collaboration w/ Crimson Eye, here we find tunes that are darker and more moody than normal. His '58 B3 was run thru 7 Leslie cabs & a pair of Marshall stacks, all distorted and overdriven to the breaking point. While this is not your father's Zandergriff, it is merely a side trip on his ever evolving musical journey. an Uncle Duff production, 2009

Ol' Neckbone been so busy workin' with Z and the whole Spaceport thing, he needed to take some time for his self. He wandered on back down to the homestead and the front porch, jammin' with his kin and fuelin' his belly with some BBQ. Well all that time back home really stirred his juices and when he got back to MPLS, he was ready to lay some serious delta blues down for Zander & Frey at the BassmentFile. This is what came out. Hope you enjoy. -best with some pork shoulder, pulled of course.

Meat To Please Me

Date Released: 10/20/2009   Tracks: 11   Sales: 4   Listens: 6

Recorded shortly after Robby's brother Cob was kicked out (oddly enough for being too wasted all the time!) and before Fat Goodrich joined the band, 1987's "Meat To Please Me" gives us the Mitts as a 3 piece with help from Alex Keaton & West Texas Fat. The loss of Cob's scattershot guitar playing is evident, but as Lefterburg took on a more dominant songwriting role the songs were the bands most accessible yet. The Mitts may have been losing their punk edge, but the attitude remained.

With his 3rd release, Van Q is at his experimental best, while still maintaining his ear for the hook. Asking an Abundance of Questions about random daily events, V.Q. weaves a grand tale out of the boring minutia of life and in the end, finds no answers there. Featuring an updated version of "Attention Deficit" with alleged samples from the cockpit of 188. Also included-a spacey, orchestral, wound down cover of Jim Carroll's "People Who Died" Van Q-all voices, sounds & colors

"I keep gettin' richer, but I can't get my picture..." Van Q shows his lesser heard humorous side on this single, poking fun at his friend & musical collaborator Zandergriff Miggs with this "Wierd Al" like spoof of a Shel Silverstein classic. The extended version features Van Q (Fender Rhodes) & Zander (Hammond B3) in a dueling keyboards freak jam. -b side includes unreleased songs from the "Abundance of Questions" sessions. -available on 12" vinyl, or downloadable audio files.

The black and rotting putrid stench of de-composition is heavy in your nostrils and heavier on your ears. Wargasm is Karkass, doing what they do best. Absinthe Minded

Date Released: 1/8/2010   Tracks: 14   Sales: 13   Listens: 13

Zander looked into the future and what he saw made him want to continue living in the moment. 'Absinthe Minded' is the Owls in vintage improvisational form. From the low end boogie of "Pedal Board Stomp" to the spaced out emptiness of "Suspended Velocity" these tracks put the spot light on the spontaneity and chemistry that few bands possess. Musically adventurous and thematically trippy, this is ZMPO at the top of their game. BassmentFile Studios MPLS, MN. UncleDuffRecords - TwentyTen

Suck

Date Released: 7/28/2011   Tracks: 8   Sales: 9   Listens: 13

Mini-LP original release: 1982 This was one of the most heavily damaged of the original masters and took Frey a lot of ingenuity and elbow grease to restore to a listenable quality, but the outcome was well worth the effort. Fading in with a recording of the M.P.D. breaking up a house party gig, Suck roars into your ears with all the reckless abandon of early years REPLACEDmints. It follows a logical progression from their debut Sorry Pa, Never Mowed The Lawn...short, fast, loud American Punk gems, but the evolution is evident in the bluesy "Suburban & Hazy", while "Come" presages some of Bet It, Lee's murky, moody indie feel. -restoration completed by Frey, Spring 2011 -digitally remastered at the BassmentFile June 2011 for UncleDuffRecords -under license from Tin Town records

djRX and ?, his anonymous partner in AlphaHistamines spent the off season scrapping together a roster full of new noise tracks. While retaining their usual frenetic beats, industrial noise and recorded sounds from the rink, this album represents a new direction for AlphaHistamines. For the first time ever they entered the studio with a backing band (non other than UncleDuff's own Tusken). This collaboration gives Light The Lamp a grungy, distorted bar band foundation that is then liberally painted with their well documented noise...Industrialized rock anthems that chug along with the adrenaline of a 3rd line wing crossing the blue line. -engineered by Frey @ the Bassment, MPLS, MN -produced by the Zephyr -djRX uses Apple computers, Akai turntables & the RMP/BST2000 - ? uses B&D power tools, LDF sheetmetal & Christian Bros. hockey sticks Tusken: -Saul Severe = bass -Billy Pilgrim = guitar -London Lloyd = piano, guitar -Winston Smith = drums -published by Headphone Music for Birchwood Sound * UncleDuffRecords * TwentYleven

Grass Stained Glass

Date Released: 9/8/2011   Tracks: 13   Sales: 14   Listens: 22

Grass Stained Glass started as a handful of new song sketches that were charted and mapped to be molded and experimented with during the Up the Creek shows, but as fans of the Owls know, what happens to songs in the live setting is a warping transformation that carries the tune to places unexplored in the studio, compiling textural layers that, while leaving them recognizable, often times places them tangentially at odds with the original versions, finding a niche of space all their own and creating something new that did not exist before the first notes were struck. [UncleDuff management notes: the above, unbelievably long run on sentence should be taken as a literary parallel to what happens when ZMPO plug in live.] What you hold in your hands is not a live album in the truest sense, but the original basic tracks and chord change vamps have been blended with various portions of tracks recorded during the Owls performance on St. Paul's riverfront to bring a close to the Eclectic*Music*River*Test. While listening, bear in mind that Zander is no perfectionist. Nor does he expect perfection from the Owls. He relishes mistakes as they sometimes open up whole new avenues for exploration. All he asks of his band is that they push boundaries and he allows them the freedom to expound upon notes and themes and then gently pulls everyone back into the groove when the time is right. This album is fraught with wrong notes, mistimed transitions and flubbed choruses, but somehow the Owls make it work and that's just the way Zander wants it...Wabi Sabi Bang Bang baby! ________-Frey, Sept 2011 -basic tracks and scratch vocals recorded June/July 2011 @ the Bassment -additional tracking recorded live on location St. Paul, Sept 4 2011 -blended, mixed & mastered by Frey @ the Bassment Thanks to: The Cosmic Stoners, Eccentric Arcade, Vorpal Queen and Let's Not & Say We Did for their musical collaboration & companionship on this experimental endeavor!

Mine Shaft gig flyer

Date Released: 9/15/2011   Tracks: 4   Sales: 8   Listens: 4

The year was 1994. Hanz had been playing bass for a number of bands in Thunder Bay's thriving punk community when he got the call. That call came from Johnny Wonderz who straked the guitar for Ontario's most notorious punk outfit, Pout. Pout had recently lost their horse addled leader and bassist to his addiction and Wonderz had been checking out Hanz at various shows. It was a match made in Heave...er...Hel...uh...Anarchy. Wonderz and drummer Lanny X were already a lethal combination of angst and energy, but the addition of Hanz Openschut on bass and vocals propelled Pout to the top of The Ontario underground. Hanz's first gig with Pout was at the storied Mine Shaft club in Sudbury. Pout headlined the show with openers Of Chaos, The Immortals, Gypsies and The Volcanos. It is widely regarded by those in the scene as one of the greatest punk shows of it's time. ------------------------- Lanny designed most of Pout's flyers and he had a habit of finding albums by bands he hated at thrift stores, using the album cover as background for his flyer. For this show we find him making a decided mockery of a certain iconic 70's album of fluff pop crap. After Xeroxing copies to pass out, the original album cover designs were often left in bathroom stalls of seedy dives to be found by unsuspecting patrons. This one recently resurfaced at an estate sale of a wealthy collector of music memorabilia. UncleDuffRecords has made Xerox prints of the original available to fans with this limited run collectable. *as a special reward - the first person who can name the album cover defaced in Lanny's flyer will receive a download code for 3 songs recorded off the board at the Mine Shaft gig.

Brown-Y-Owl

Date Released: 10/27/2011   Tracks: 11   Sales: 13   Listens: 27

So, I got bored, what can I tell you? Distributing music via CD or download or even old school methods like cassette or vinyl is boring and old hat. Anyone can (& everyone does) do that. I wanted to find a way to tie together most of your senses in one delivery method. So here it is. When you open the box, you can smell it. When you dig into it, you can taste it. When it takes effect, you can feel it. And finally, when you get to the middle, you find the capsule. Open it. Inside is a flash drive with audio files. Put it in your device. Load. Hit play. You can hear it. Enjoy. -Zandergriff Miggs _____________________________________ UncleDuff brand Brown-Y-Owl is an owl shaped brownie with a flash drive encased in a heat resistant capsule embedded within it. (It took us a few tries to understand the whole "heat resistant" thing. First few runs thru just melted the drive during the baking process) This is most certainly headphone music, best enjoyed with your computers "visualizer" on. The tunes run the gamut from slow building Floydian epics ("Universe Sausage Apple Place", "Oceans Of Space") to barnstorming psyche-funk (#4# {sterling}) to straight ahead jam fests with plenty of room for those extended instrumental excursions the Owls have made famous. *tracked & mixed by Frey @ theBassment *produced by Z. He can smoke up some hell hot BBQ. He can sing with the raspy emotion of a fallen angel. He can make a 6 string howl like a devil let loose in the delta. He is the Blues incarnate. He is "Neckbone". This album was pieced together from recordings that span the last several years. Some of the tracks have long been part of his repertoire live. Some are things he's been noodling about with for years, but most are new cuts written and recorded this summer. Neckbone spent the better part of the last year across the pond in England hanging out with Indie wonderkid Dax Burnley (otherwise known as Faux Pocket). Burnley's youthful enthusiasm got Ol' Neckbone fired up and full of inspiration. Put this in your system, pour yourself a glass of Kentucky Straight Sour Mash and feel the blues wash your cares away. -Grover bent the strings & kissed the mic -T'Cor laid the bottom & stomped the beat -Zander tickled the keys & spun the Leslie -Frey twiddled the knobs & pushed the faders an UncleDuff production - published by Birchwood Sound - TwentYleven

News Of The Weird

Date Released: 2/23/2012   Tracks: 12   Sales: 15   Listens: 29

Blasting off with pounding cathedral-verbed drums trailed viciously by their own echos before you feel the low hum that slowly builds, gently swirling at first...then faster...louder...spiraling all around you, the fact becomes obvious that Zander's B3 is in your head. So begins "News Of The Weird", the latest musical excursion from the Parliament of Owls. Building off a foundation of 70's arena glam power rock (think T. Rex, Queen, etc) the Owls fold in equal measures of tripped out funk and prog pomposity to craft an album of grandiose proportions. Though these tracks are much more tightly arranged than ZMPO's usual loose jams, you will not miss out on any of the instrumental prowess you've come to expect from this band of musical savants. Zander brought in his long time friend and collaborator Van Q on vocals to lend credibility and shine to these arty, glammed rockers and the Stampeding Heard shower their brassy stabs liberally throughout. With tales of the strange and unusual, weird and cosmic, even the rare occurrence of a love song, this album will grab you by the ears and not let go until the final notes of the tongue in cheek, funkabilly closer fade out. --Frey, January 2012 News Of The Weird -Zandergriff=the key -T'cor=the bottom -Colin=the string -Otis=the beat -Gnome=the atmosphere -VanQ=the voice -Massey Ferguson's Stampeding Heard=the brass -songs by Miggs/TruJust/Lokdred -Frey did the recording @ theBarn & the mixing @ theBassment -an UncleDuffRecords production - Birchwood Sound - TwentyTwelve

Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie

Date Released: 5/3/2012   Tracks: 13   Sales: 11   Listens: 15

What happens when UncleDuffRecords' resident fader pusher bars the door to the control room for 3 weeks with several hours worth of ZMPO's newly recorded material? Well...this. "Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie" is essentially Frey's album. Oh sure, the Owls provided the instrumentation, but what came out at the end of his long process is strikingly different than the raw audio put to tape. Frey had been meticulously researching the recording techniques that were being experimented with in the year of his birth. 1967. The year that gave us the studio as "instrument" in the form of such iconic albums as Hendrix's "Axis: Bold As Love" or The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's..." (which also figured heavily into VanQ's cover art for this release). Armed with a collection of salvaged parts...springs, coils, metal plates, tubes, old warped tape reels and other assorted electric devices, Frey took the raw analog recordings and morphed them into this experimental magnum opus. But make no mistake, "Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie" is not an album full of oldie's channel staples. This is pure now. 2012, filtered through vintage techniques and it sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. 13 tracks sprawled across two discs giving your head over an hour and a half of mind numbing experimentation. __________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Zanzibar's Menagerie: -Zandergriff=the key & the voice -T'cor=the bottom & the other voice -Colin=the string -Otis=the beat -Frey=the arrangement & the magic Recorded dry @ theBassment, October 2011 - February 2012 Mixed, Effected, Manipulated & Produced by Frey @ theBarn March 2012 Cover art by VanQ - Helectricart UncleDuffRecords - Birchwood Sound - TwentyTwelve Don't forget your headphones...and keep your stick on the ice!
