How did Figment come about?
I began making up bands when I was in high school. Why? Why not. It was a fun way to get through the day.
One day though, my friends and I decided to take it one step further, so we painted our fictitious band name and album title on the football stadium press box. Within a week our little inside joke had swept the school and people were writing The Sleez on desks, book covers and lockers. That was when we realized that with a little imagination and clever street marketing you could easily create a fake band.
Now mind you, we didn't want to create Milli Vanilli, but we did want to create something that was uniquely ours. The fact that everyone else in our school wanted to be a part of it was a rush.
Although I always wanted to pursue a career in the music industry, I never did. I guess it was a combination of things. An average musical talent at best, limited connections and a disdain for charlatans kept me from pursuing a career in the "biz". So in the end I put my dreams on hold and settled for a far less glamorous job. Although at times I did some feel regret, I decided that it was better to enjoy the music business from afar than be directly involved in the industry itself. After all, did I really want to do A&R or publicity for bands I couldn't stand when all I had to do was pick up a pen and a piece of paper and create my own?
So as a hobby, I continued to create fake bands, design their albums and even develop imaginary tours. It was and still is, a fun way to exercise my creativity.
While I may never write a hit song, I may write some funny lyrics or even just a great song title that will resonate with someone else. To me, that's not only fun, it's using your imagination to make a dream come true, that's figment.
What is figment?
Figment is an imaginary sandbox where you too can be Brian Wilson. It's a place where you can be a musician, producer, manager, and label head, all while still working a day job.
Figment is a place where you can ONLY dream of rock, rap, pop, funk or jazz fame. Okay, so it exists only in your imagination...is that a problem? It isn't with us!
So get your creativity flowing! Create a fake band, record an imaginary album, design the cover art, market it to discerning imaginary band fans, tour to support it and even sell your imaginary tour shirt. You can do it all right here at Figment.
So join us. We'd love to hear a figment of your imagination.
Figment: All bands, No music.
