Band Bio
The Phony Fakers are a post-grunge pop punk band from Providence, Rhode Island.
Background story: The Phony Fakers started as a joke, nobody ever saw anything coming out of this. They started out as The Fakers. They were outcast and usually spent hours on end practicing in front man Brett Young's garage. After a while they started to become more well known and started playing local neighborhood gigs and house parties. They were well known for their smooth, but fast riffs and catchy lyrics. Before long they caught the eye of manager Stan Gaines, who really enjoyed their music. He offered them a record contract with a major label but it was decided among the band members to decline. The Fakers knew they were nothing but a bunch of phony's. They liked the idea of the band but wanted to keep it simple and not take things too seriously. After all, the band was a joke. They were The Fakers and they aimed to keep it that way. All they wanted was a pack of devoted fans without selling out or getting too big. Then a few months passed, mind you this was 1994 and the summer was almost over. The Fakers had played a show at a local club and people really started to catch on. Drummer Will Reynolds was approached by Stan alone this time. He told Will that he would offer the band a one million dollar record deal to sign on with TMTYTF Records. Will and the other guys talked it out and finally gave in. Upon recording their debut album, they were told that their name had already been taken by another band. The guys talked amongst themselves and finally came to the decision to call themselves The Phony Fakers, because they originally thought this would go nowhere. Their songs "Kickin' It Old School," "Famous Assholes," and "Reality Bites" were original songs the band had written long before the contract. They had always played those three at all of their shows as well as some other songs that really weren't very good but nonetheless clusters of noise the band had formed when they were busy fooling around. When they began recording their first album, they used the three songs and the other seven were brand new and had been written since their signing to a major label. They wanted to name the album after their track "Kickin' It Old School" but they decided to self title it instead. Today, The Phony Fakers are known for their punk sound fused with fast paced lyrics that blast out the rap metal we all hear. Even though they signed with the label, they're still an indie band and stay true to their independent roots. The Phony Fakers haven't quite gotten big yet, but we'll just have to see how far they can really go!
