Band Bio

Zachary Cole wasn't always the mellow albeit slightly-annoyed-with-the-world-today musician strumming out light and meaningful tunes under the pseudonym Neutron Emission. Back in the late '90s he was a simple coffee shop employee at Zephyr Coffee House and Art Gallery in Pasadena, CA. where he served biscotti and chai while occasionally bringing his acoustic guitar to open mic nights after work. He found himself at a constant inner struggle with his love of the simple surroundings of the coffee house and his distaste for the uppity and high maintenance image of many of its patrons. It was that struggle that set him on his way to working on the material for his debut album on Reign Forest Records "Injustice By Evil Means".

Cole's music can be described as Radiohead on quaaludes or a slightly bitter Jack Johnson, but the music never borders on anger or aggression, it merely holds a mirror up to the world and gently chastises it. Songs like "Coffee, Tea and Gasoline" are obvious toe tapping nods to his coffee house days, while songs such as "Imaginary Friends" and "Rain Dance" will have you simultaneously bobbing your head to the music and shaking it at society.

The album plays out like a stern but gentle explanation from a parent. The first half of the album shows what the world has done wrong, while the second half shows how it can better itself and suggests ways of doing so. A new father, Cole penned several tracks on the album as anthems of aspiration to his newborn daughter; such as "Little Footsteps", "Building Blocks" and "Be The Change". Finally, the album ends as if to say "I've told you what to do, now I can only hope you listen," with the ending track "Bad Reception".

"Injustice By Evil Means" is the perfect soundtrack to a rainy or sunny day, both life affirming and eye opening. Whether you drive a Prius or a Hummer, you'll be sure to love Neutron Emission.

...but don't be surprised if you wind up switching to a Prius.

Songs from the Treehouse

Date Released: 7/28/2009   Tracks: 11
Sales: 6   Listens: 12

Zachary Cole's newest album, which was recorded entirely in a home built recording studio within a treehouse in Cole's Southern California backyard, has a much different outlook on life than his first release. Cole is a little less brooding and alot more at peace which is obvious on tracks like "California Sunrise", but still manages to keep just enough angst simmering for tracks like "Cellular Structure". This album is also carbon neutral and the packaging is printed on 100% recycled material.

Powerlines and Dirt Roads

Date Released: 5/10/2009   Tracks: 5
Sales: 5   Listens: 8

"Powerlines and Dirt Roads" is a collection of b-sides left over from the original recordings of Neutron Emission's debut album "Injustice By Evil Means". Most are still in their rawest form, maintaining that recorded-on-the-spot sound with mainly Zachary Cole's acoustic guitar work and minimal background instruments. A stand out is the original recording of "Little Footsteps" in which Zachary's daughter can be heard playing in the background as he recorded the track in his California home.

"Spit your watermelon seeds out the window/and grow yourself a brand new world". A line from the track "Watermelon Seeds" which easily sums up the message of Neutron Emission's debut album "Injustice By Evil Means". It's a simple message of taking what you would normally throw away and using it as a foundation for a brighter tomorrow.
